The Importance Of Breathing Space And Realistic Timelines

After a great session mentoring one of my clients this morning, I was reminded of just how important it is to give yourself breathing space and always allow for a little extra time in the early stages of your brand's evolution. The last thing you want to do is cut corners in an effort to stick to unrealistic timelines.

But it's not always easy to identify how long timelines need to be for each process, especially if this is your first foray into running your own fashion business. For example, what step in a typical "plan to launch" do you think would usually take the most amount time to complete?

A. Building your website
B. Finalising samples
C. Pricing your products

If you answered B, then you would be correct! Samples TAKE TIME and more often than not you may need to have numerous samples made of the same style. If that sounds frustrating you're right, it definitely is (welcome to the rag-trade!), but maybe your initial fabrics won't give the drape your garment needs or the first collar might be totally wrong. So building in sufficient time for the sample process is vital as you will need to inspect, fit test and provide feedback to your manufacturer more than once to get your samples spot on. Your samples also need to reflect the standard and quality that you are happy to release to market, so build in time and get it right!
